Gold Grills
In listing 10 things that made her laugh today, Michelle Malkin links to this article about the growing fashion trend of gold teeth covers for teens, including those looking for a prom fashion statement. Yes, gold grills… they're not just for rappers and thugs anymore.
The first time I saw somebody with a gold grill look was about ten years ago when I was working at a fast food place to make a little scratch while in school. The kid couldn't have been more than 15 and I could hardly pay attention to his order because I was mesmerized by his idiotic gold teeth. All the more so because they had something inscribed on them I couldn't make out. It was only after he left that a coworker informed me they were Nike swooshes. Considering how damn foolish it looked, I knew that I was bound to see more of it.
And indeed I did, but not often in person. Instead it was the rappers who got into it. Most didn't do the teeth covers either. They had their real teeth ground down and given gold caps. Interestingly, the dentist most sought out for this was an elderly Jewish gentleman, but I can't recall his name.
Now, the kiddies are getting into the fad. The piece mentions an eighth-grader who's on his second set of grills. There's also a girl who got a grill for her lower teeth as a prom accessory. You can see a picture of her here. My first thought was that she appeared to get Jaws's (from the Bond movies) lower chompers, but after further reflection decided that it looked somebody had wrapped tin foil over her teeth. Concerning this same girl:
Turning heads was all part of Mika Castro's plan. When she goes to her senior prom on May 14, she also plans to carry a diamond-encrusted "pimp cup" goblet with her. A dressmaker is stitching her burgundy and gold dress.
This may be slightly excusable as it might be representative of the typical teen urge to stand out or seem unique, i.e. to do something so positively absurd that a wide swath of the general population thinks you a damn fool. With any luck, she'll someday look back at pictures of her prom and properly ask, "What was I THINKING?!" If, however, she looks at them and thinks the event was a seminal spike on her "coolness" tracking chart, she will have proved herself to still be a damn fool.

yah, I admit some grills look bad, but not all of them. Some have unique designs and have
special cuts and engraved diamonds. What makes a grill any more uglier than some kid who
pierces his whole bottom lip with some peg or pierces a chain from his belly button to his
balls.

Hmmm… at least B was able to make a coherent defense of grills. The rest of you can’t do much more than spew profanities and call grills some variation of “cool,” which doesn’t mean anything. I stand by my position that they look foolish. If you want to participate in the ill-founded fad because you want to fit in, rebel, or desire the admiration of friends or women who are similarly deceived, go ahead. But they still look foolish.

Try to have an open mind about the situation. No one is telling you that you have to like the trend, but try not to be so negative towards someone else’s choice of personal appearance. I am certain there is something about you that other people would poke fun at in an instant. I have a gold grill myself. People don’t mind it much on me. I don’t wear it too often, though, either. Be aware of the crowd you’re speaking to. People wouldn’t be so quick to jump on your case if you weren’t so ignorant in the way you address the situation. No one is telling you to like; don’t call something you don’t understand “idiotic”, though.

It’s all about personal preference, if you like it wear it, so the fuck what. No need to discriminate against blacks because they wear them. I’m white and I like the damn things, who cares. it’s kinda weird to start a website bashing someone’s personal taste. Aight, everybody has their own opinion about grills~~~~~> and my personal opinion is that they are the shit. I have 7 sets myself. But um, just cause you dont look right wit a grill in ya mouth doesnt mean that the people who wear them are dumb, or bad people for that matter. A grill just happens to be a unique fashion statement that adds a sense of individuality for the wearer. Kinda like when the jheri curl first came out. With that bein said, stop bein a mothafuckin hata, just cause yo mouth dont cause a cold front hoe. I got a smile on the rocks, all you got is dentures cuz.

I’m a 18 year old female and I have had 3 grills I really don’t understand why they change color if you smoke i had 24k they said it wouldn’t cange but it did i had white gold and everything acn you please give me a better reason for it changing.

Lets see, Id rather spend the $1900 I spent for my grill,the $1400 I spent on tha Lambo doors that I just put on my lac,$2800 for tha spinning blades on my lac,& $2100 worth of video/audio accessories for that same lac than to go and put spikes in my hair,with 10 holes in my ear,wear faded black jeans everyday and ride around on a skateboard all fuckin day,wouldn’t you?

since now one has seemed to come up with this point all add it. it would seem to me that most the posters here with there comments are probably in the age of 15 to 25 years old forgive me if i’m wrong. Now see a twenty years old gentlemen or women (substitute whatever you want to called) walks drives into the parking of my business he has the seat leaned back making it appear that average 5′ 10″ person behind the wheel is a midgit. His stereo is bassed out so much i have to wonder about putting the glass repairman on speed dial. The car is “pimped” out beyond anything i could have ever afforded at his/her age. As he/she walks up to the building and in the door i take notice of the “bling” must add a few pounds. As he/she approaches i ask if i can be of help. In asking me in what appears to a foriegn language i think that i’m asked for a application. I notice at the same time that every tooth in front is covered in gold. My job unfortunatly is a one on one business all employees dealing directly with the customer. Now if this was a true story i would tell anyone that came in “no i’m sorry we are not taking on any new employees at this time”. anyone care to know why? well here what myself and others that operate a business see. i see someone who has no respect for there appearance, and don’t give the line of i don’t care what other people think. you do weither you see it or not. you want to look cool. “hey he looks cool dressing like i’ll look also if wear it. let me give you all something else to think about have you given thought to how you will look by age thirty or forty with all that bling? disco died this will also and think all the fun you might have made now about the guy still wearing the wide lapels and polyesther liesure suit. The kids born today will probably be laughing at you later in life. I’m people you can try to defend yourself all you want dropping the f-bomb calling people names talking about your conquests with ladies. but has any of you ever stopped for a second and relized how much of idiot you realy sound like. i was once like the people who have so far posted here but fortunalty i found the error of my ways early enough which one of you can say that you have a job making $16 an hour, owned your on house leaglly by 24 years old, owns your own car, and in my case a harley. would doubt that even 10% (that’s 2 out of the 20)posters so far can say that and that is me giving the benifit of the doubt. Seriously read what you type a few times people before after you type it compare it to what you hear other people in the real world say and how they talk. you may come realize something hopefully for the best of everyone. truthfully when i see how young people act today i can only pray i’ll be gone before they are in charge.

it is simply jewelry you come across as someone who is against the culture of hip hop. it is preference nothing more you don’t like them don’t wear them but you have no right to say that they look foolish. I have a set and I have never been called a damn fool and if somebody did that would be an opinion. I know a lot of trends come and maybe you are one of those people that doesn’t like trends because your an “unconformist” buy you come across very one-sided.
