Dangerous Dan Thoughts and musings on the world

I really don’t have much to add to this kerfuffle (go to Captain’s Quarters for excellent coverage), but the notion that it was a planned assassination is just prima facie absurd. The main idea from the tinfoil hats is that the American military decided to kill Sgrena because she was a threat to them. The big problem with this theory (among many, many problems) is that Sgrena is still alive. If it really was a hit, then she’d be dead. Even if the soldiers missed her on their first volley, which would have been extremely improbably if that was their goal, they could easily have finished the job once her car stopped. Instead, the troops helped them out of the vehicle and rushed them to a hospital.

The other part of the theory, that she was to be killed because she was a threat or knew too much or knew the truth or something else, doesn’t hold much water either. The only damage to America and the U.S. military that she’s accomplished is complaining about the incident, throwing around wild accusations, and telling an ever-changing account. She hasn’t done anything besides that. So without the shooting incident, she would have been no threat at all as the incident itself is what’s made her any kind of threat.

I thus have to wonder why the military would try to assassinate somebody, fail to accomplish it when success would have been easy, fail to follow through when they had the chance and took their target to the hospital instead, and all to get rid of somebody who wasn’t a threat until the attempt itself was made. Clearly, this is nonsense. But don’t think that won’t stop some lefties from developing Rube Goldberg conspiracy theories.

  1. Don’t forget the far, far right. You know, the ones who consider Bush way too liberal. They’ve got some pretty whacked out theories about stuff. My current favorite is the one about how the earth actually IS the center of the universe, and the notion that the earth orbits the sun is a vast conspiracy. Fun.

  2. Ummm… I don’t think it’s really fair to describe such a theory as right or left. It’s outside such notions as the vast majority of the political spectrum doesn’t subscribe to it. You may counter that the other beliefs the people hold agree with conservativism, but that doesn’t mean you can call it something wrong with conservatism. These are just minority oddballs.

In contrast, the lefty conspiracy theories I mentioned are very widespread on the liberal side. Take a tour of the Democratic Underground, Daily Kos, Atrios, The Nation, and other places to get an idea of this. And I’ve personally heard some otherwise very intelligent people espouse some of these paranoid views. Their views are not isolated.
