I remember reading the passage about Joseph being brought up from the pit in Genesis 37 in my Hebrew narratives class in college. The original Hebrew says "they" brought Joseph up, but the NIV translated it as "his brothers." "They" could be either the midianite caravan or his brothers. "His brothers" is the most obvious interpretation of what "they" meant, but it is not the only possibility and unless you have plenty of footnotes explaining this translating decision (which the NIV does not have), I think it is a poor translation.
